We love glass rods here at Left Coast Tackle. They're like our bamboo rods brother from another mother. Back in 2007 I set out with the goal of bringing my own line of fiberglass rods to market. With that in mind I purchased glass rods from other manufacturers i.e. Hardy, Thin Line (Japanese), Scott, Sage etc. with the sole purpose to study and evaluate. I found many positives and at the same time felt I could add another dimension to that specific market.
After my evaluations I felt that fiberglass had alot to offer to people but there were two main positive aspects. One, fiberglass has alot more feel to it than graphite and this is due largely to the lower modulus (properties) of fiberglass. Two, fiberglass has a somewhat similar feel to bamboo rods but at a much lower price. Add those two factors together and you have a material that gives you a wonderful feel when casting from about 10' out to 50' give or take.
So, "E" glass or "S" glass? Lets go back to the term modulus. In laymans terms, modulus means stiffness and elasticity. If given two identical fiberglass rods, one made from each type of glass and all things being equal, then a rod made from "S" glass should be slightly brisker as it has a slightly higher modulus than "E" glass. Now, that is taking into account that the person rolling the glass is very talented and knowledgeable, has used the same mandrels, and the thickness of either glass material is exact along the entire axiom.
That also means that in theory, since "S" glass has a higher modulus than "E" glass, which means it is a slightly stronger material, that one should be able to get an identical fly rod using slightly less material resulting in a lighter weight rod that would be just as strong. In theory.
For your consideration starting in 2009 Left Coast Tackle will be offering both "E" glass and "S" glass fly rods in various length, line weight, and piece configurations. All of our rods will finished out with the best of components. Premium flor grade cork. Nickel silver reel seat hardware with our logo stamped into the butt cap. Nickel silver winding checks. Snake Brand smoke guides. Thramer agate stripping guides.
On our "S" glass rods, beautiful select koa wood fillers. The fiberglass on these rods is an unsanded brown. They will be finished out with beautifiul light olive wraps with tipping at select areas.
On our "E" glass rods, one aspect of these rods is that they will come with graphite ferrules. During R&D on the specific tapers it was determined that the graphite ferrules lend themselves a bit better to the overall feel. The reel seats feature stunning koa that I personally selected on a trip to Hilo. For you amber glass fans out there, these rods are for you. Beautiful amber glass shafts finished out with burgundy wraps and tipping at select areas.
All rods come with a beautiful hand sewn rod bag with our label sewn on and a brass capped rod tube.
